Big Weekend: Sanchez, Kane, Rodgers…

It’s time for Arsenal’s strikers to start taking some of their chances, whilst Alexis Sanchez needs to either perform or get a proper rest. Plus Wayne Rooney, Brendan Rodgers, Mark Hughes and Tim Sherwood… Arsenal’s strikers Arsene Wenger will be mightily pleased to have got past Tottenham in the League Cup in midweek, but the presence of Mathieu Flamini as the club’s top goalscorer won’t be giving him the mirth that many on social media seem to have derived from the statistic. Arsenal’s lack of goals is an oddity. They are registering more shots per game than last season (20.2 vs 16.1), shots on target (6.8 vs 6.0), shots in the penalty area (12.2 vs 9.0) and shots in the six-yard box (1.5 vs 0.9). Their shot accuracy is slightly down (50.0% vs 51.7%), but that does not explain the incredible loss of chance conversion, down from 16.2% to just 6.1%. Basically, they’re just missing chances and coming up against inspired goalkeepers. Something has to give. Either Arsenal suddenly find their goalscoring streak or Wenger’s side will be out of the title race before they even laced up their running spikes. They haven’t scored more than two goals in any of their ten matches in all competitions. Leicester and Crystal Palace have both done so three times each. Alexis Sanchez Forget all the debate about Theo Walcott or Olivier Giroud for a minute, for it is Sanchez who has been Arsenal’s most disappointing player so far this season. “Nobody plays 60 matches in a season anymore,” was Wenger’s wonderfully self-unaware quote this week. Sanchez played 58 last season, and that doesn’t include the Copa America last season. The poor lad is in desperate need of a rest, but Arsenal’s hopes are pinned on him in the absence of a ‘wow’ striker.

Ferguson ‘did homework’ before buying Balotelli

Sir Alex Ferguson has said “I did my homework” and was warned against signing Mario Balotelli when Manchester United manager.

Ferguson says that he had targeted Balotelli in 2010, with the then Inter Milan striker regarded as one of the most promising talents in Europe.

However, the former Manchester United manager says he ‘did his homework’ before opting against signing the then 20-year-old, with Ferguson describing those who warned him against the deal as “a Godsend”.

Balotelli subsequently joined neighbours Manchester City that summer, before earning moves to AC Milan and Liverpool off the back of the considerable hype he received as a teenager.

“In 2010 I briefly flirted with the idea of signing Mario Balotelli, the talented but controversial Italian striker,” Ferguson wrote in his new book, ‘Leading’.

“I did my homework on him, speaking to a few Italian contacts, but the feedback I got confirmed it was too big a risk.

That some people took our ‘City in crisis’ headline from Sunday seriously exposes the reactionary hyperbole of modern football, but Manuel Pellegrini will still be perturbed after two home defeats in five days.

“It was exactly the same as Juventus, we were playing in that crazy way,” said Pellegrini after the game, who must also be slightly concerned about Sergio Aguero’s stop-start beginning to the season. “We must concentrate more because two balls decided the result. In the last two games we didn’t play with the concentration or intensity we had shown in the first five games.”

City’s wonderful start to the season afforded them the opportunity for slip-up, but they would be ill-advised to let huge positivity ebb away before September is out. Lose to Tottenham next weekend and they could find themselves behind neighbours United.

From a performance perspective, you get everything you’d expect from the MagistaX right through the upper of the boot. Once you slip your feet into them, comfort becomes the norm. The entire upper of the Obra envelopes around your foot like no other boot does, and the collar completes a very dynamic fit and feel. Even across the area where a tongue normally exists, the soft knit upper sits flush and provides a snug fit in the right areas. Technically, the boots could be worn without laces but with them in tied you get to really personalize a secure fit.

At this point we are pretty familiar with Nike Flyknit, but as a refresher it is intended to defy conventional shoe manufacturing processes by effectively implementing an engineered upper woven from special yarns. Utilizing a custom Nike last and Nike Flyknit construction, MagistaX offers a snug fit at the arch, heel and forefoot, and the added element of a Dynamic Fit collar hugs players in, locking them down in the boot.

Around the lip of the shoe, these feature recycled Nike Grind rubber on high abrasion and drag areas for enhanced durability. Think of this as the region that sits just above the soleplate to upper join. To the touch, it feels slightly rough but it serves its purpose pretty perfectly.

Underfoot, the MagistaX features a responsive Lunarlon midsole, perfect for a little extra spring back on indoor courts (IC). The honeycomb style panels that line the soleplate are the same ones used on prior Elastico series, so it is obviously an area that Nike have confidence in.

Harry Kane scored his 30th Tottenham goal of the season as they increased their chances of reaching next season's Europa League by beating Newcastle.

The hosts were hampered by a supporter boycott, which contributed to their lowest crowd of the season, and went behind to Nacer Chadli's 25-yard shot.

Jack Colback scored after the break, but Spurs replied through Christian Eriksen's free-kick before Kane struck.

Spurs moved into sixth, while Newcastle suffered a sixth straight defeat.

That worrying sequence equals Newcastle's worst run of results in the Premier League as they remain seven points above the relegation zone.

Only second-from-bottom QPR have a worse points record in 2015, and with a trip to Loftus Road and third-bottom Leicester still to come, John Carver's side could yet be caught.

They rarely troubled Spurs, who have hardly been in top form themselves and are seven points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City.

But a fourth win in 12 games lifted Mauricio Pochettino's side above his former club Southampton, who they visit next Saturday - the Argentine's first return to St Mary's since leaving last summer.

A return to winning ways for Tottenham and a late boost for English striker Kane contrasted with the mood engulfing St James' Park.

Reports suggested that up to 16,000 fans would boycott this match in protest at the way the club is run by owner Mike Ashley.

And although those numbers failed to materialise, there were patches of empty seats as the attendance reached 47,427 - almost 5,000 down on the capacity.

Those who stayed away did not miss much from a Newcastle team whose most lively outlet was Ayoze Perez, still searching for a goal in 2015.

The visitors did not impress either early on, and there looked no immediate threat before they took the lead on the half-hour. Chadli picked the ball up in a central area and as the Newcastle defence retreated, the Belgian drilled low for his 11th of the season.

The hosts were unable to muster a response until shortly after the interval when Perez broke down the right, cut the ball back and after Daryl Janmaat's shot was blocked, Colback tucked in the rebound.

Finally the home supporters found their voice but their optimism lasted seven minutes. Colback fouled Eriksen after the Dane broke down the left, and the Spurs midfielder curled in the resulting free-kick which found its way into the net without a touch.

Nabil Bentaleb headed over soon after, and a relatively quiet Kane was denied by a brilliant save from Tim Krul.

But the 21-year-old was not to be denied, racing through during a late counter-attack to become the first Spurs striker to reach 30 goals since Gary Lineker in 1991-92.

We look at five talking points from Manchester United's 4-2 win over rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford...

United on the rise, City demise?

The result moves third-placed Manchester United four points clear of City and takes them to 65 points – one more than they collected in the whole of the 2013/14 season.

For United fans, the future looks bright. Gary Neville told Sky Sports the victory will give his former team “enormous confidence”, while Niall Quinn reckons the display on Sunday was “the best Manchester United performance since the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson”.

As for City, the 4-2 reverse was their eighth defeat in their last 14 matches in all competitions, extinguishes any lingering title ambitions – and raises serious questions over Manuel Pellegrini’s future as manager.

“It’s getting pretty messy for him,” said Quinn. “Messrs Begiristain and Soriano [the City director of football and CEO] will leave Old Trafford today and have doubts in their minds about him. They have to report to the owners - who want to rule the soccer world over night - that this man is struggling a bit. That could cause him a big problem.”

Neville agreed: “It’s a cross-roads moment for this team. The owner will want answers. People will have to convince the owner they can trust him moving forward.”

Few would have predicted Ashley Young would be one of the stars of Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge of Manchester United but the 29-year-old, who has worked diligently at full-back and wing-back this term, has been a shining light amid United’s mixed performances.

Last month Young said: "The manager has been fantastic. He gives you the confidence to play and confidence helps massively. I can only repay him with my performances on the pitch."

Against Man City on Sunday he indeed repaid his boss. "He’s been excellent today," Neville said as he named Young man of the match.

Kenny Jackett says Wolves can still make play-offs despite Brighton draw

Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett pledged his men will go flat out in their remaining nine games to clinch a play-off place after having to make do with a point from their 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Spanish defender Bruno Saltor drove the Seagulls ahead on 70 minutes but Rajiv van La Parra replied four minutes later with a cross that keeper David Stockdale palmed into his own net.

Jackett was left to reflect on "thin dividing lines" after Stockdale brilliantly pushed a goal-bound shot from Bakary Sako on the post deep into stoppage time.The former Millwall boss said: "It was a close game and a fantastic save at the end to deny us.

"But we have to keep pushing; two teams above us lost and we have two important games coming up. We would have loved three points, but thin dividing lines decide games in the Championship."

Wolves are three points adrift of the play-off positions and Jackett insists that the position is "still open for us".

He added: "We've not had a bad season at all. A number of clubs in the Championship are looking for promotion, including us, and it is still open for us."

Jackett admitted former Brighton keeper Tomasz Kuszczak would have been "disappointed" at allowing Bruno's shot to slip underneath his body, while he felt Albion centre-back Lewis Dunk could have been sent off when handling early on.

He said: "I felt possibly it could have been a red card but the referee played an advantage with Benik Afobe being one-on-one. From the follow-up, Sako had a shot cleared off the line."
